Chief Minister of Uva Province, Chamara Sampath Dassanayake stated that an internal water leak in Uma Oya Project that releases 80 million litres of water per day, has posed a risk to Bandarawela area.
The National Building Research Organization too stated that houses and multi storied buildings located around Bandarawela town have faced risks of caving in.
It has been revealed that the effects of Uma Oya project have resulted in this situation.
Meanwhile, Uva Provincial councillor representing the JVP, Samantha Vidyarathna stated that more than 4,000 houses in Bandarawela have experienced cracks and caving in as a result of Uma Oya project.
Construction activities of Uma Oya project commenced on the 29th of April 2009 in Bandarawela.
